According to report, Yusuf Bichi, the Director General of Nigeria’s secret police, Department of State Services, brought hackers to assist Bola Tinubu in hacking WhatsApp to access the communications of his opponents during and after the 2023 presidential election.

According to security insiders, the DSS chief invited the experts in from Cape Verde.

President Tinubu was the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, and his victory is being challenged by the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party, along with their candidates, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, respectively, at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

“The DG of DSS brought hackers from Cape Verde to help Tinubu break into WhatsApp messages of his opponents during the elections and afterwards,” one of the sources said.

President Tinubu approved the immediate retirement from service of all Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, Advisers, and the Comptroller-General of Customs in June, and announced their replacements.

Tinubu also removed the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, AbdulRasheed Bawa, from office indefinitely.

“But guess who was spared from being axed! Yusuf Bichi. That is the reason why Tinubu retained Bichi after firing all the heads of security agencies,” one of the sources said.

In a statement, Willie Bassey, the Director of Information in the authority of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, stated that the suspension will allow investigations into “weighty allegations” of misuse of authority against the suspended chairman of the anti-corruption committee.

“President Tinubu has approved the indefinite suspension from office of AbdulRasheed Bawa, CON, as the Chairman, Economic, and Financial Crimes Commission to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office. This follows weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.

“Bawa has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Director, Operations in the Commission, who will oversee the affairs of the Office of the Chairman of the Commission pending the conclusion of the investigation,” the statement read.

Bawa was appointed as the EFCC head by then-President Muhammadu Buhari in February 2021, following the expulsion of his predecessor, Ibrahim Magu, over corruption charges.

Bawa was later summoned for questioning by the DSS and has been detained by the secret police since then.

On June 28, SaharaReporters stated that Bawa had been transferred from the secret police headquarters to a private facility.

According to sources, Bawa was transferred to another institution so that authorities could have complete control over him after he refused to write any statements while in jail.

On Wednesday, June 21, 2023, SaharaReporters stated that Bawa had declined to write statements at the secret police facility. According to reports, Bawa informed investigators that the DSS had no right to keep him without charges, which explains his refusal to write any statements while in jail.

“They’ve taken Bawa from DSS headquarters to one of their private facilities to have total control over him after he refused to write statements requested from him,” a top security source had said.

Bawa has been detained with Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, after their suspensions from their respective positions by President Tinubu’s administration due to corruption and abuse of authority claims.

According to SaharaReporters, Emefiele implicated Bawa as a collaborator in the Naira redesign scam that shook the country a few months ago.

Bawa’s invitation and questioning by the DSS occurred just days after Emefiele was detained and flown from Lagos to Abuja for questioning about alleged corruption and abuse of office.

On November 23, 2022, then-President Buhari announced new naira notes in denominations of N200, N500, and N1,000 alongside Emefiele. Emefiele stated that the old notes would be rendered ineffective on January 31, 2023.

Addressing journalists after the event, Emefiele insisted that the move was not directed at anyone, despite speculations that it was pushed by the Presidency cabal in order to prevent Tinubu, the ruling APC’s then-presidential candidate, from winning the February 25, 2023 election.

The strategy produced great misery for Nigerians due to a scarcity of naira notes, with the CBN failing to match the demand for fresh notes. The approach resulted in a cash shortage and long lines at banks and ATMs.

To make matters worse, Emefiele ignored a Supreme Court judgement that declared the old notes lawful tender until December 31, before former President Buhari distanced himself from the disobedience.
