See What NACCIMA Said As Tinubu Becomes ECOWAS Chairman

The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has issued a statement in response to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appointment as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

According to news reports, Tinubu was named ECOWAS’s new chairman on July 9, 2023.

The Nigerian leader was elected at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, which took place over the weekend in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.

Tinubu took over for Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

In a congratulatory greeting sent on Sunday in Lagos, NACCIMA expressed confidence that Tinubu will be able to address the ECOWAS body’s difficulties while also implementing policies that will make doing business in the area easier.

Dele Oye, President of NACCIMA, stated in a statement that Tinubu’s appointment comes at a time when the ECOWAS region is preparing its member nations to be well-integrated into the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Nigeria, as the continent’s largest economy, is projected to play a critical role in the region and the continent, according to Oye.

He emphasized the importance of addressing some of the obstacles to intra-West African commerce. The NACCIMA president also stated that there are still various impediments to the free flow of goods and services throughout the region, such as lengthy procedures, expensive transportation costs, and corruption.

These concerns, according to Oye, had stifled regional trade expansion, hampered West African economic prosperity.

“A lot is expected from Nigeria now more than ever in the history of the country among its peers in Africa.

“We are aware of your credentials as a seasoned politician and astute administrator with an enviable track record in governance and leadership.

“We are fully confident that you will bring your wealth of experience and expertise to bear on the challenges currently facing the region.

“We are optimistic that you will be able to tackle these issues head-on and implement policies that will facilitate the ease of doing business within the region,” he said.
