Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, Governor of Anambra State, has urged the Federal Government to intervene immediately in the failed section of the Onitsha-Owerri Road, which has been completely shut off by gully erosion.

During an assessment of the site on Monday, Soludo, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, stated that the state government is acting on an emergency basis and cannot wait for the Federal Government to assist.

He stated that Anambra State has over 1,000 active gully erosion sites, and the Onitsha-Owerri road issue is simply a “appetizer” when compared to the state’s other erosion sites.

He also urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Anambra State due to the erosion threat, noting that the people suffering the hardship are ndị Anambra, as such, the state government had embarked on intervention to arrest the situation before other measures.

He said, “We have over 1,000 active erosion sites in Anambra State. This is just one of them. We are acting on an emergency.

“Because the erosion at the Onitsha-Owerri road by Oba is a major devastation, we are not waiting for the Federal Government, even though it is their responsibility.

“We are appealing to the Federal Government to quickly intervene and save this road from total collapse.”

Mr. Ifeanyi Okomma, Commissioner for Works, indicated that the erosion is significant, measuring eight kilometers plus 100 along the Onitsha-Owerri Road.

He stated that the Anambra State Government is intervening with Soludo’s approval and has stopped the pace of the erosion that Tamad Construction Limited has already commenced.

“Having achieved the first objective already, the second objective is to stop more erosion slide while the state waits for the Federal Government,” he added.

Sir Obadi Ifedili, President-General of the Oba Community, thanked the governor for sending his team to investigate the gully erosion, which has been a persistent problem, and pleaded with the Federal Government for a prompt response because the road is a federal road that connects to other states.
