UPDATE: Court Invalidates Arrest, Detention Of Godwin Emefiele

On Friday, a High Court in Abuja overturned the arrest and custody of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Following an application by Emefiele, the presiding judge, Bello Kawu, approved the order.

On June 9, President Bola Tinubu removed Emefiele as CBN Governor and asked him to delegate his powers to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, Deputy Governor, Operations Directorate.

The Department of State Services (DSS) announced the next day that Emefiele was in its custody for “some investigative reasons.”

Since then, Emefiele has remained in DSS custody, with the agency arguing that it has a valid court order to keep him.

Following a judgement from the FCT High Court, the DSS said on Thursday that it has prosecuted Emefiele in court.
