On Tuesday, the Department of State Services (DSS) insulted a legal practitioner, Maxwell Okpara, for taking the agency to court.

According to news sources, Okpara and other lawyers filed a contempt of court case against the DSS and its Director-General, Yusuf Bichi, over the ongoing arrest of suspended CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

According to the lawyers, the criminal case against the DSS boss stemmed from a disobedience of repeated court judgments and decrees demanding the release of suspended Central Bank of Nigeria governor Godwin Emefiele from the agency’s custody.

The lawyers, led by Maxwell Opara and Ahmed Tijani, are requesting that the court imprison Bichi until he clears himself of the contempt.

According to the lawyers’ application for the issuance of Forms 48 and 49 filed before the court, the DSS DG should have released Emefiele from prison based on the verdicts and orders of Justice M. A. Hassan, Justice Hamza Muazu, and Justice Bello Kawu.

The consortium testified in support of the application that Justice M. A. Hassan barred the respondents in that suit, particularly the DSS, from arresting, detaining, or interrogating Emefiele for offenses related to terrorism financing, money laundering, round tripping, and financial crimes of national security dimension, among others.

In a series of tweets, the DSS questioned the reasoning for the court case, wondering if Emefiele is among the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra.

UPDATE: Court Invalidates Arrest, Detention Of Godwin Emefiele

Describing Okpara as a Biafra agitator and charge and bail lawyer, the DSS slammed him for defending the suspended CBN Governor.

The agency wrote: “Charge and bail, overzealous uninformed IPOB/ESN lawyer Maxwell Okpara mobilises other like minded lawyers against DGSS. Futile Efforts. Well, Nigerians, beware! This is in bad faith. Transferred aggression.

“A Biafran Republic agitator and Outlawed IPOB counsel defending the suspended CBN Governor. Is IPOB defending one of theirs???? What a contradiction…..hmmm…what’s the connection? Is someone telling us something? May Maxwell be properly educated on points of law, please.”
