Sit-At-Home: Gov Mbah Seals Market, Other Businesses That Refused To Open In Enugu State

The Enugu State government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, has declared war on residents and companies who do not come to work or open their shops on Mondays in the state for whatever reason.

According to news reports, the governor banned Monday’s sit-in directive from a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which had vowed to continue protesting Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s incarceration by the Nigerian government despite various court judgments and United Nations Human Rights Commission on Arbitrary Detention communication ordering Nigeria to release.

Mbah, who is currently contesting his validity before the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, had threatened to shut down firms that did not open on Mondays by prohibiting the sit-at-home order.

Making his threats a reality, Mbah began sealing businesses in and around Enugu on Monday, July 24, as citizens continued to respect the sit-at-home edict.

In a statement published on Saturday, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, reminded citizens and business interests in the state that the unconstitutional Monday sit-at-home order remains in effect.

He had said, “Given this, civil servants, schools, markets, financial institutions, business premises, and others, are hereby directed to resume normal activities on Monday.

“Government restates its resolve to apply sanctions against defaulters of its cancellation of the illegal Monday sit-at-home order in the state.

“Markets that fail to open to customers on Monday shall be shut down indefinitely. Shops in the markets that close on Monday shall be sealed and re-allocated to those eager to do business in the state. Government extends the same warning of sanctions against schools, financial institutions, shopping malls, department stores, business premises, and others that may defy its directive.”

However, a video obtained by SaharaReporters on Monday shows a group of persons wearing aprons, presumably from Governor Mbah’s office, shutting departmental stores in Enugu’s Spar Market.
