UPDATE: Niger President, Bazoum Breaks Silence After Coup

Niger’s President, Mohamed Bazoum, broke his silence on social media on Thursday after the military acknowledged to taking over the country.

After capturing Bazoum on Wednesday, the military declared their takeover of power, according to media reports.

The military confirmed the coup on television early Thursday.

During the broadcast, ten military officers addressed President Bazoum personally, indicating that their seizure of power was intended to bring the administration to an end owing to the regime’s “deteriorating security situation and bad governance.”

They declared the constitution dissolved, all institutions suspended, and the country’s borders closed in their proclamation.

Bazoum promised to defend “hard-won” democratic advances in a tweet on Thursday.

In a tweet published in French, Niger’s President says, “The hard-won achievements will be safeguarded.” All Nigerians who value democracy will take care of it.”

ATTEMPTED COUP: Niger President To Be Sworn In

Hassoumi Mashesoudou, the country’s foreign minister, also made a rallying cry on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, urging “all democrats and patriots” to help put an end to the coup.

President Bazoum’s foreign minister, Hassoumi Massoudou, told FRENCH 24 that the leader was in good health and that the elected government was the legal and legitimate leadership in Niger.
