Godswill Obot Akpabio, President of the Senate, voiced worry on Friday about the migration of hoodlums into the National Assembly compound, noting that legislators now felt endangered by their presence.

He claimed that as the 10th NASS settles down for legislative activity, hoodlums and persons with no business in the grounds wander all over the Senate and Reps wings, begging and posing a security risk to members and National Assembly workers.

Akpabio made the remarks while hosting members of the National Assembly Service Commission at the NASS premises in Abuja.

The Senate President’s objections came after statements by the NASC Chairman, Ahmed Kadi Amshi, who discussed the Commission’s problems and other issues to him.

In response to the Commission’s Chairman’s question about staff allowances, Akpabio stated that he was aware of vast sums channeled toward worker comfort, but that everything was not about the welfare of staff.

The Senate President lamented the complex’s infrastructure collapse, filthiness, and insecurity, claiming that legislators had lost their phones and other valuables to hoodlums who set up shop in strategic locations and in front of offices.

He also bemoaned the deterioration of infrastructure and the disorderly environment in which the 10th Assembly operates.

Akpabio said, “we are aware that the entire complex is under renovation. We must also look after the environment. It is not all about the staff, we will like to see a cleaner environment and a secure complex.

“A lot of Senators have lost their telephones because of the influx of people into the complex”.

He emphasized that the National Assembly remains a symbol of democracy, and that the 10th Senate is prepared to make legislative history.

Earlier, Amshi praised the Senate President and Deputy Senate President, describing them as “seasoned public servants.”

He requested that legislators furnish a list of their legislative aides for documentation.

“By September let us finish the issue of legislative aides” Amshi said.
