An approaching controversy has erupted in Kano State as a result of the placement of the portrait of Kano’s ousted Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on the coronation hall wall of Kano State Government House.

The tension might not be unrelated to earlier speculations about Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s plans to dismiss the Emirs appointed by the immediate past governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and restore Sanusi as Kano’s lone Emir.

The Kano government and State House of Assembly, on the other hand, refuted rumors of plans to abolish the newly constituted emirates and sack the first class Emirs.

However, Nigerians awoke on Monday to an image of the portrait on social media, generating palpable alarm among inhabitants of the state.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, said the placement of Sanusi’s photo in the coronation hall was part of the venue’s continuing refurbishment.

He went on to say that the deposed Emir’s photograph was returned because the hall was built for his presentation of the staff of office once he was crowned as Emir.

The statement reads, “The history of the coronation hall is synonymous to the 14th emir of Kano Malam Muhammadu Sanusi because it was built for his presentation of staff of office after he was crowned as the emir succeeding late Alhaji Ado Bayero in 2014 during the administration of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

“So traditionally, his picture shall remain there forever. Bringing back the picture of the 14th is part of the ongoing rehabilitation to give the Coronation hall a facelift.”
