The new military authorities of Niger, who took over the nation in a coup a few days ago, have jailed at least 180 members of the former democratically elected administration, according to the previous ruling party on Monday.

According to the party’s spokesman, Hamid N’Gadé, those seized included the president of the Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism, Foumakoye Gado, the Mines Minister, Ousseini Hadizatou, and the Energy Minister, Mahamane Sani Mahamadou.

According to N’Gadé, the coup plotters also detained Transport Minister Oumarou Malam Alma and his deputy, Kalla Moutari, as well as Interior Minister Hama Adamou Souley.

General Omar Tchiani’s elite squad declared Niger’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum of the PNDS, out of power on Wednesday. On Friday, Tchiani declared himself the new emperor.

Following that, the coup plotters suspended the West African country’s constitution and disbanded its constitutional institutions. The coup has been widely condemned around the world.

On Sunday, the West African Community (ECOWAS) issued an ultimatum to the coup leaders, saying that if Bazoum was not released and reinstated within a week, ECOWAS would take action, which might include the use of force.

On Monday, the military governments of Burkina Faso and Mali warned ECOWAS not to intervene.
