The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, is organizing a statewide protest, and the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, claims to have organized at least 2 million people in the region to participate.

According to Newsmen, due to the difficulty caused by the loss of the fuel subsidy, the NLC and the Trades Union Congress, TUC, have scheduled their strike and nationwide mass protests for Wednesday (today).

The two-day meeting between the Federal Government and organized labor that concluded in an impasse on Tuesday was the catalyst for the decision.

The NLC President, Joe Ajaero discussed the planned demonstration on Tuesday by saying: that the organised labour had no reason to suspend the planned national protest.

After another round of negotiations broke down at the Presidential Steering Committee on Palliatives meeting held at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, Ajaero spoke shortly after.

In support of the NLC’s action, COSEYL said in a statement released on Wednesday by its President General, Goodluck Ibem, that its members were fully behind it and emphasized that the protest was necessary due to the intolerable suffering being experienced by Nigerians.

The statement reads in part, “We have mobilized two million of our members to fully support the nationwide protest by the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and other groups in the country.

“Nigeria and her economy depends solely on fuel and other petroleum products to function and any decision or policy that increases the price of the petroleum products will hit hard on Nigerians.

“We therefore pledge our full support to the protest in order to save Nigerians from extinction as a result of the hardship and suffering they are currently facing.”
