Niger Coup: West Africa Defence Chiefs To Meet In Nigeria

ECOWAS, the regional group for West Africa, announced in a statement on Tuesday that its defense chiefs would convene today, Wednesday, in Abuja, Nigeria, to discuss the recent coup in the Republic of Niger.

Recall that on Sunday, the Economic Community of West African States’ presidents threatened to use force against the junta while imposing sanctions on Niger.

They granted the junta one week to release the hostage President Bazoum.

The junta had already issued a warning that it would thwart any “plan of aggression against Niger” by Western or local powers.

Following the summit on Sunday in Nigeria, ECOWAS said that it had “zero tolerance” for coups.

The regional alliance promised to “take all necessary steps to restore constitutional order.” if its demands weren’t met within seven days.

“Such measures may include the use of force,” and military chiefs are to meet “immediately” to plan for an intervention, the statement added.
