According to reports, Nigeria has turned off electricity to the neighboring Niger Republic as part of sanctions against the soldiers responsible for the country’s recent military coup.

Although blackouts are common in the Niger Republic, it was learned that people of Niamey, Maradi, and Zinder only have access to power for around an hour at a time before it is cut off for up to five hours.

According to Niger’s energy agency, Nigelec, the country’s current power outage is due to Nigeria cutting off supply to its northern neighbor.

According to a BBC source, the supply to Niger was turned off on Tuesday as a result of a presidential order from Nigeria.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), according to Arise TV, has declined to comment on the power disruptions in Niger.

Remember that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had set the Niger Republic’s coup leaders a seven-day ultimatum to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum as the country’s democratically elected leader.

The regional organization warned the coup plotters to put Bazoum back in order to avoid severe punishments.

Following the Extraordinary Meeting of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the ECOWAS on Sunday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Nigeria, the directive was part of the statement that the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, read.

Touray declared that Bazoum is still the rightful leader of the Niger Republic, as recognized by ECOWAS, and that if the military failed to reinstate him within the allotted time frame, the regional organization would close the land borders and enforce a no-fly zone.

If the military fails to rescue President Bazoum from custody and return him to power within the specified deadline, the body warned to halt financial operations, shut off energy, and freeze the Niger Republic’s assets.
