Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane, a spokesman for the military junta, made the announcement in a statement that was read aloud on national television on Monday night.

Under former president Mamadou Tandja, Zeine served as cabinet director in 2001 and as finance minister in 2002.

Until Tandja was deposed in a coup in 2010, he was the finance minister.

According to FRANCE24, Abdramane also appointed Lieutenant-Colonel Habibou Assoumane as the new leader of the presidential guard in Niger.

As of Sunday, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had set a new meeting to discuss the crisis in the Niger Republic after giving the country one week to restore ousted President Mohamed Bazoum or face penalties, including possibly military involvement.

In anticipation of a potential military invasion by the ECOWAS, the military officials in the Niger Republic reportedly sent reinforcements to Naimey, the capital.

The National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, the junta’s official name, continues to hold President Bazoum hostage and maintains effective control over Niger.

Due to the prospect of military intervention, the country’s military officials have closed the airspace, causing stress and confusion throughout Northern Nigeria, particularly in the areas that share borders with Niger.
