The latest diplomatic mission from African nations to Niger, intended to restore constitutional order following a July 26 coup, was denied on Tuesday by the country’s junta.

According to NAN, the junta refused to enter negotiations despite pressure from the United States and the UN.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) heads of state are getting ready for a conference on Thursday to talk about their impasse with the Niger junta, which disregarded a deadline of August 6 to return ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

Although ECOWAS has stated that military involvement is a last resort, the possibility will be explored.

The junta, which has shut down Niger’s airspace, refused to let the African Union (AU) and officials of the UN and ECOWAS to enter the nation on Tuesday, according to the French magazine Jeune Afrique.
