Sam Amadi Reveals Why El-rufai Was Considered Unfit To Be A Minister

The former FCT minister’s nomination by Bola Tinubu’s administration surprised the Harvard University alumnus, who was chatting with Rudolf Okonkwo of 90 Minutes Africa.

Nasir El-Rufai should not have been selected as a minister, according to Dr. Sam Amadi, a former executive chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), since the former governor of Kaduna State is too polarising.

“He shouldn’t have been nominated,” Dr. Amadi said with reference to Mallam El-Rufai. “Many Nigerians are mistaken about leadership. El-Rufai no doubt has the technical competence, brilliance, and capacity to deal with difficult issues but lacks the central political skill to build community.”

El-Rufai was in charge of certain development initiatives when governor of Kaduna State, according to the previous candidate for the Labour Party’s governorship nomination in Imo State, but he left the state deeply polarised.

“Nigeria is at a point where security and national cohesion should be central because you must have a country before you can talk about making anybody a minister,” the law professor said.

El-Rufai was one of the 28 ministerial nominations who were initially sent to the Senate for consideration and confirmation. However, out of 48 nominations, three—including the former governor of Kaduna State—failed to get the Senate’s approval to serve as ministers in Tinubu’s administration. The nominees’ lack of security clearance, according to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, was the reason their confirmation was being delayed.

Amadi, however, voiced the opinion that the concept of security clearance may have been intentionally created to prevent El-Rufai’s confirmation.

“This is just a foretaste of the level of manoeuvring that we might see as we continue in this journey,” the social commentator posited.
