The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) mission, which was led by former Nigerian military head of state Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), failed to meet with the Niger Republic military Junta on Saturday.
According to Anaedoonline.ng, the team, which also included the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, traveled to Niger to hold new talks with the country’s military government, which is led by General Abdourahmane Tchiani.
However, Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine greeted the group that was supposed to meet with General Tchiani, the leader of the Niger Republic coup.
UPDATE: Niger’s Military Junta Agrees To Dialogue
The discussion with a representative of the unstable West African nation apparently lasted for nearly 90 minutes, according to BBC Hausa.
The junta’s refusal to meet with Abdulsalami’s team is unknown, although there are unsubstantiated claims of a coup by the Niger Republic’s presidential guard.
Recall that the ECOWAS team, which was also led by Abdulsalami, was unable to meet with both the coup leader and President Mohamed Bazoum.
When some Nigerian clerics met with him last weekend, Tichiani later expressed regret, stating they had refused to see the group out of anger.

General Tchiani said it was regrettable that ECOWAS did not even attempt to hear their side of the story before imposing penalties and giving them a deadline to resign.
The coup’s mastermind continued, “They were furious, but I apologized to President Bola Tinubu.”
