UPDATE: Abdulsalami, Sultan Of Sokoto, Others Finally Meet Niger Junta

The military junta in the Niger Republic has met with a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the group, led by former chief of the Nigerian military, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), met with Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine of Niger, who welcomed them at the airport.

They then met with General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the chairman of the junta, for a new round of talks to reinstate civil rule in Niger, which is said to have lasted around 90 minutes.

The ECOWAS group also spoke with Mohamed Bazoum, the former president who has been held captive since July 26.

Coup: Peter Obi Finally React On ECOWAS Imminent Niger Invasion

Recall that last month, the ECOWAS team was unable to meet with both the coup leader and President Mohamed Bazoum.

When some Nigerian clerics met with him last weekend, Tichiani later expressed regret, stating they had refused to see the group out of anger.

General Tchiani said it was regrettable that ECOWAS did not even attempt to hear their side of the story before imposing penalties and giving them a deadline to resign.

The coup’s mastermind continued, “They were furious, but I apologised to President Bola Tinubu.”
