Glitz and Glamour As Obi Okpuno Uruagu Celebrates New Yam Festival

Obi Afam Iloka (Obibuenyi), the Obi of Okpuno Uruagu yesterday celebrated this year’s new yam festival at his palace, Obi Okpuno Uruagu Palace in Nnewi, Anambra State.

The event which saw de cream de la cream of the society as well delivered so much cultural class, fun, traditional entertainment and glitz to the vibrant crowd, friends, well-wishers that graced the event is not set up to celebrate harvest but also to showcase brotherhood and love.

The Obi of Okpuno Uruagu, Obi Afam Iloka during his welcome address reminded the general public that the celebration is planned to thank God for bountiful harvest and to show appreciation to farmers for their effort in the last farming season and to encourage them to go harder in the next one.

Obi Afam who is a practicing farmer educated the crowd which have gathered at his palace on the need for farming which he said helps to provide income to vulnerable families and to provide food to the family for daily consumption.

His words: “This year new yam festival is one of kind and we should thank God for bountiful harvest. Afia Olu is traditional way of celebrating God for his mercy and grace for big harvest.

“I want to encourage my friends, well-wishers and anybody who is listening to me to venture into farming because there is a lot of monetary benefits in it and there’s always something to eat.”

Speaking to Anaedoonline.ng, Chief Oliver Nwagbala who is the sponsor of the high profile event revealed that the event is championed at celebrating the farming season, hence providing psychological encouragement to farmers.

The event saw different type of masquerade parade at the palace with live music performances by top musicians and dance performances by different groups.

Top prominent sons of Nnewi, political and business technocrats were present including arguably the richest man in Anambra State Chief Cletus Ibeto, Mr. Mbazuluike Iloka, Mr. Onyeka Innocent Okoli (Organiser) and many others.

Okpuno Uruagu  is a rich sub community in Uruagu Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
