Gabon Coup: Military Leaders Dissolves National Assembly, Close Borders, Others

Hours after ousting President Ali Bongo, the military coup in Gabon has proclaimed the dissolution of the country’s democratic government.

Senior military officials from Gabon appeared on national television early on Wednesday to declare the coup, according to an earlier report by Anaedoonline.ng.

Under the auspices of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), the military officers claimed to speak for all security and defence forces in the country of Central Africa.

A few minutes later, Libreville, the capital of Gabon, also reported hearing gunfire.

The key choices made by the coup leaders are listed below.

1. Cancellation of the results of last Saturday’s presidential election

2. Closure of all the country’s borders until further notice

3. Dissolution of Cabinet

4. Dissolution of the Senate and National Assembly

5. Dissolution of the Constitutional Court

6. Dissolution of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council and the Gabonese Elections Centre.
