Formerly known as Charly Boy, veteran Nigerian artist and political activist Charles Oputa has refuted accusations that he called for a coup in his country.

Charly Boy was criticised by online users when one of his social media posts was misinterpreted as a call for a coup in Nigeria, according to Anaedoonline.ng.

Recently, Charly Boy responded to the events in Gabon, where the country’s former leader Ali Bongo was captured on camera pleading for assistance after being placed under house arrest by the leaders of the military coup that overthrew the government and had one of his sons arrested for treason.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, Charly Boy stated his disappointment earlier on Sunday that God is not answering his prayer in Nigeria as He has in Gabon, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, where soldiers had staged coups to overthrow the elected governments.

However, a number of news outlets interpreted the message to suggest that the 73-year-old musician was supporting an overthrow of the government in Nigeria.

Charly Boy, however, claimed in a new post on his Twitter profile on Sunday night that his earlier statement was misconstrued and criticised the news outlets who carried it for using “cheap, stupid sensationalism” after receiving a number of online criticisms.

“Dem wan take me do escape goat? How “E dey Pain Me” turn into a call for coup. Der fathers”, the singer wrote on X.
