In order to protest Chief Executive Officer Mele Kyari, members of the Northern Youth Advocacy for Good Governance Initiative and the Arewa Youth Forum invaded the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) offices in Abuja on Monday.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the Arewa youths were demanding Kyari’s sack and probe while carrying placards with various slogans.

The youths asked that the Federal Government not extend a contract for pipeline surveillance given to Tantita Security, a company owned by Mr. Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, according to report.

The protesters raised their placards and banners despite the intense security presence, pleading with President Bola Tinubu to postpone renewing the contract due to the widespread financial mismanagement it involves.

‘Tompolo’s Pipeline Surveillance Is a Fraud’, ‘President Tinubu, Please Save Nigeria from these Jackals’, and ‘Suspend and Probe NNPC Menchmen’, some of the placards’ inscriptions read.

Comrade Usman Saidu, President of the Northern Youth Advocacy for Good Governance Initiative, is said to have co-signed a declaration that Comrade Musa Adebayo, President of the Arewa Youth Congress, read aloud during the demonstration.

They claimed in the statement that there had not been a meaningful increase in oil output since the contract was given to Tompolo.

“The successes being celebrated are normal production rates before the mayhem of the Niger Delta Avengers,” Adebayo stated.

He also voiced disapproval of efforts being made to give the contract to former military general Tompolo again.

“It is a major matter of concern how much-concerted effort is being made to re-award the pipeline surveillance contracts despite the tension, financial malfeasance, disinformation, and abnormalities that are inherent in the contract,” Adebayo said.

The demonstrators emphasised that numerous NNPCL executives should be investigated for their participation in agreements relating to the security and upkeep of pipeline infrastructure.

They claimed that throughout the course of the previous year, these contracts cost the federal government about $1 billion.

The statement added: “As concerned citizens, we should understand that the country is too tense to allow for any action that may breed internal turmoil and more controversy within the ranks of its citizenry.”

Adebayo added that awarding contracts to someone “who should ordinarily be behind bars for the economic mayhem caused in the Niger Delta region between 2016 and 2018 is total anti-peace and anti-development.”

He promised that until their demands were granted, the protesters will remain inside the NNPCL building.
