In a recent development, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced its intention to arraign Chike Ibezim, a young entrepreneur and the brother of Nnamdi Ibezim, the publisher of Reportera News. Chike stands accused of being complicit in cyber-stalking, cyber-bullying, and conspiracy.

Chike’s arrest on August 10 followed a publication on Reportera News, a news platform established by Nnamdi Ibezim. The article claimed that former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, was involved in drafting a controversial verdict for the presidential election tribunal. Fashola vehemently denied these allegations, deeming them “defamatory” and subsequently petitioning the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

Upon receiving a formal complaint from Fashola’s legal representatives at Priory Terrace Solicitors, the Nigerian Police Investigators from the Force Intelligence Bureau initiated an in-depth investigation. Their inquiry revealed that Chike Ibezim had made a false publication on his social media handle, @ReporteraNews, previously known as Twitter, on Saturday, August 5.

The contentious post alleged Fashola’s involvement in drafting a contentious verdict for the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and falsely claimed that the military had been deployed to restrict his movements. This post, according to the police, was intended to tarnish the former Minister’s reputation and posed significant threats to national security and stability.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, addressed the media in Abuja, shedding light on the investigation. He revealed that technical and tactical analysis had traced the publication to a phone number registered under Chike Ibezim’s name. Subsequently, the police arrested Chike at his office address in Maitama, Abuja.

However, it appears that Nnamdi Emmanuel Ibezim and an individual named Tope, who was alleged to handle social media correspondences, remain at large and have not responded to police invitations. The NPF has clarified that its investigation extends to other individuals involved in the case, with possible arrests and prosecutions on the horizon.

The NPF issued a stern warning against cyber-stalking and the proliferation of fake news, emphasizing that such actions are criminal and have the potential to incite unrest. They stressed the need to discourage these harmful practices for the collective well-being of the nation.

Chike Ibezim, in his response to the allegations, expressed his lack of knowledge regarding his brother’s whereabouts. He clarified that the phone number used to share the controversial post on the ‘X’ platform belonged to his startup business and that he was unaware of its use by his brother.
