According to reports, gunmen who were thought to be herdsmen attacked the Opi-Agu community in the Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State and killed three people.

On Tuesday, our source confirmed that the attack took place on Monday.

The deaths occurred just two days after masked gunmen massacred three more villagers in the Agbada Nenwe community in the state’s Aninri local government district.

According to a local insider who did not want to be identified for security concerns, the attackers were herdsmen.

The herders arrived with their livestock at the villagers’ properties on Monday about 4 p.m., the source claims. They abandoned their farms, though, after the locals requested that they do so, and they later came back to attack and murder the villagers.

The source explained: “It happened that when they came with their cattle. The cattle started eating and destroying crops and vegetables planted by the farmers, some of whom were still in their farms. They (farmers) reacted and chased the herders with their cattle away and warned them never to return to the farms anymore.

“They actually ran away with their cattle and nobody suspected anything evil until in the dead of the night when they invaded people’s houses and inflicted deep cuts on the people.”

Another villager in a post shared on Facebook wrote: “We are now living in fear in the hands of Fulani herdsmen. I just confirmed the death of our brother who they killed yesterday night at Enya Uhuchiri. I also learned about the deaths of two others, including a woman. This is so sad.”

When reached by phone, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the state police public relations officer, stated that he had not yet received a briefing on the incident but pledged to respond appropriately as soon as he did.
