Massive Educational Infrastructure Projects Underway in Ogun State

In a significant development for education in Ogun State, the Chairman of the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, has announced the commencement of construction and rehabilitation on approximately 360 projects spread across the state’s three Senatorial Districts. These projects are being funded through the 2018-2019 Intervention Project Fund, jointly provided by the state and federal governments, and they are expected to be completed within three months.

Dr. Majekodunmi revealed that the projects would encompass the construction and renovation of classrooms, installation of toilet facilities, drilling of boreholes, provision of furniture, and the supply of e-library materials, among other essential components. Contractors have already been selected and have received contracts for these projects. The SUBEB Chairman emphasized the importance of adhering to high-quality standards to ensure the safety and benefit of the students who will utilize these facilities.

He applauded the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun for its collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in implementing the School-to-Farm program in primary and junior secondary schools. This initiative is expected to reignite students’ interest in agriculture and provide them with practical knowledge and skills in farming practices.

Historically, the teaching of agriculture in schools has been primarily theoretical, leaving students with little practical understanding of agricultural processes. However, the new program will expose students to hands-on experiences in poultry farming, animal husbandry, crop cultivation, and more. This practical approach aims to equip learners with skills for self-employment, entrepreneurship, and a deeper understanding of agricultural biology and processes.

In addition to fostering agricultural education, the initiative is expected to contribute to increased food production in the state and, by extension, the country. As part of this program, UBEC has allocated a portion of its grant to the Agricultural Education Training Programme (AETP) to make agricultural science at the basic education level more practical and skills-oriented.

The move is a significant step toward diversifying education and preparing students for various career opportunities in the agriculture sector. By offering practical agricultural education, the program aims to eliminate stereotypes associated with farming, promote self-employment, and empower students with valuable life skills.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, recognizing its potential to transform how students perceive and engage with agriculture. It aligns with the state government’s efforts to nurture students’ interest in agricultural enterprises and provide them with a broader perspective on the world of farming and agribusiness.

Overall, Ogun State’s investment in both educational infrastructure and practical agricultural education represents a forward-looking approach to enhancing learning experiences and preparing students for future success in various sectors, particularly agriculture.
