DSS Arrests CBN Finance Director During Retirement Party

According to reports, Benjamin Fakunle, the departing Finance Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been held by the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to information, Fakunle was arrested on Wednesday during his retirement party in Abuja and has since been detained by the DSS.

A story seen on Business Day claims that the CBN officer who recently retired was investigated for his involvement in the apex bank’s recently released seven-year audited statements, which are believed to have violated specified accounting and reporting norms.

According to reports, Fakunle is being questioned about the reasons for and ways in which the accounting principles that allegedly differed from those of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) were employed to prepare the published accounts of the CBN.

Additionally, he would have to defend the claimed payment of N401 million for the document, which is against the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria’s regulations.

One of the top CBN officials, Fakunle, was detained and is currently being questioned in relation to the investigations being conducted by Special Investigator Jim Obazee, who was appointed by President Bola Tinubu in July to look into the alleged financial irregularities of the CBN under suspended Governor Godwin Emefiele.

Since his arrest on June 10, 2023, a day after President Tinubu suspended him from office, Emefiele has remained in the DSS’s custody.
