Nigerian Police Arrest Nearly 3,000 Suspects in Nationwide Crackdown

The Nigeria Police Force has recently reported significant progress in its efforts to combat crime across the nation. In a recent announcement, acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun revealed the arrest of numerous suspects involved in various criminal activities, including armed robbery, kidnapping, homicide, possession of illegal firearms, sexual offenses, cultism, and more. Additionally, a substantial number of firearms, ammunition, and stolen vehicles were recovered, and kidnapped victims were successfully rescued.

Electoral violence: Police Records 185 Cases, 203 Arrests And Recover 18 Firearms

Key Highlights:

1. Arrests Across Various Crimes:

The police arrested 288 armed robbery suspects, 187 kidnap suspects, 198 homicide suspects, 59 suspects for illegal firearm possession, 168 suspects involved in sexual offenses, 265 suspected cultists, and 1,891 individuals for various crimes.

2. Recovery of Firearms and Vehicles:

– A total of 127 firearms and 612 assorted ammunition were recovered, enhancing public safety.
– The police also retrieved 89 stolen vehicles, contributing to reduced criminal activities.

3. Successful Kidnapping Victim Rescues:

– The dedicated efforts of law enforcement led to the safe rescue of 71 kidnapped victims, reuniting them with their families.

4. Central Motor Registry (CMR) Impact:

– The CMR, recently automated and rolled out, has significantly improved vehicle tracking and recovery. Out of 1,244 registered vehicles, 234 were identified as stolen on the platform, leading to 46 recoveries.

5. Review of Firearms Licensing:

– An ad hoc committee was established to comprehensively review firearms licensing and regulations, ensuring public safety and security.

6. Community Involvement:

– The police called on citizens to report suspicious firearms-related activities, fostering community involvement in crime prevention.
