Osita Chidoka, a former minister of aviation, has counselled South-Easters to develop political coalitions and strong alliances with other geographical regions.

The zone’s goal of producing the President of Nigeria, he claimed, can only be accomplished through the alliance.

Chidoka made it apparent that the current strategy being used by politicians in the region cannot ensure success for a presidential candidate of South-East origin during a live programme on FLO 94.9 FM Umuahia.

The South West geopolitical region, which was traditionally in opposition, has realised the necessity of being in the centre, he told the South Easterners.

He clarified that the South West’s realisation of this was an act of appropriating the strategy of alliance with the North, which in return, had made them relevant since the return of democracy in 1999.

Chidoka encouraged his people to reconsider the strategy for their own gain, recalling how the South East had previously played significant political leadership roles under the NCNC/NEPU, NCNC/NPC, and NPN/NPP accords.

He emphasised that, unlike what happened in the South East during the presidential election, no zone could elect the country’s president by relying solely on votes or important candidates from that region.

The former Minister claimed that votes from the South East are consistently cast in favour of one candidate, meaning that any ideal alliance made by the region with other power blocs might put a man from the East in Aso Rock.

He added that if the PDP had zoned the ticket to the South East with a Northerner as the running mate, it might have been able to capture the presidency in 2023.

He emphasised how the South West was quickly seizing control of coalition and alliance game plans, improving the political standing of the region.

“The South East should return to the coalition and negotiate with other regions to win the Presidency. It is something we can’t go alone”, he maintained.

He expressed sympathy for the governors of the South East on the issue of insecurity and claimed that the South-East’s situation has gotten worse due to the country’s failing security architecture.

He consequently counselled the governors to make proper and consistent use of security votes.
