The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), a human rights organization, has raised concerns over the alleged summary execution of three youths in the Awgu local government area of Enugu State, Nigeria. The incident reportedly occurred during a joint operation involving the military and police. The group has called for transparency and a thorough investigation into the matter.

Controversial Circumstances Surrounding the Killings:

The Enugu State Police Command initially stated that the three individuals killed were members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), associated with the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB). They were said to be planning to enforce an “illegal sit-at-home” order in the state. However, residents of the community in question denied the occurrence of any gun battle, leading to confusion and skepticism surrounding the incident.

In a statement issued by Intersociety, the organization labeled the alleged unlawful killing as “false gallantry” and called for action from the relevant authorities. They expressed concerns not only about the killings but also about the silence of security agencies regarding the abduction of over 30 travelers by suspected killer herdsmen in Enugu.

Calls for Accountability:

Intersociety called upon the state police commissioner, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Zone 13, and the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army to conduct a diligent investigation. The organization seeks to hold erring officers accountable for any wrongdoing.

The human rights group posed several critical questions regarding the incident, including:

– The true identities of the individuals killed.- The circumstances, timing, and legal basis for the killings.
– Whether the victims were armed and engaged in violence.
– The legality of enforcing a “Sit-at-Home” order during the early hours of the morning.
– The proportionality of force used in the operation.
– The authenticity of firearms reportedly recovered from the victims.

Intersociety also expressed concerns about the activities of “Jihadist herdsmen” and other jihadist groups that have reportedly terrorized over 22 communities and villages in the South East since 2022. The group alleges that these activities are exacerbated by the partisanship and complicity of deployed security forces.
