Osun Police Call for Voluntary Surrender of Illegal Firearms

The police in Osun State have issued a call to individuals in possession of illegal firearms to voluntarily surrender them at the nearest Divisional Police Headquarters. This move is in response to a directive from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, aimed at addressing the proliferation of firearms. In this blog post, we will delve into the details of this initiative and its significance in enhancing public safety.

The Call for Voluntary Surrender:

In a statement by SP Yemisi Opalola, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, individuals in possession of illegal firearms are encouraged to surrender them willingly. It’s important to note that there are no punitive measures attached to the submission of these firearms. The objective is to reduce the number of illicit firearms in circulation and enhance public safety.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, previously announced the suspension of the issuance of licenses for small arms in Nigeria. This decision was made to address the proliferation of firearms, as there are concerns about the sheer number of weapons in circulation. Egbetokun emphasized the need to temporarily halt the issuance of firearms licenses to avoid exacerbating security challenges.

Reviewing Firearms Licensing Procedures:

To comprehensively address the issue of firearms control, the Nigeria Police Force has established an ad hoc committee. This committee is tasked with reviewing firearms licensing procedures and regulations in line with the Firearms Act and other existing laws. The aim is to enhance the effectiveness, transparency, and accountability of these regulations for the benefit of public safety and overall security.
