As the Governorship Election case Tribunal, which is based in Markurdi, the state capital, prepares to rule on the case challenging the election of Hyacinth Alia of the All Progressives Congress (APC), there is a tangible sense of anxiety in Benue State.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, Alia’s victory in the 2023 governorship election is being contested by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Titus Uba, who is PDP’s governorship candidate.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) proclaimed former priest Alia the victor of the March 18th governorship election.

In order to defeat his closest rival, Titus Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 223,913 votes, the APC governorship candidate received 473,933 votes.

The PDP and Uba moved the tribunal in an attempt to have the election results reversed in their favour after the INEC declared Alia the winner.

They requested that the tribunal annul the election on the grounds that the candidates had broken the electoral law and had allegedly provided INEC with forged documents.

However, a three-member panel presided over by Justice Ibrahim Karaye earlier postponed the case for judgement following closing arguments from the attorneys.

On Friday in Makurdi, it was learned that many of Uba’s followers believed he would win the lawsuit, while many Gov. Alia supporters believed the APC would receive a favourable ruling.

Many opposition PDP members have travelled to the state capital in the hopes that their party will prevail in the tribunal, but others are pessimistic due to the size and power of the state’s ruling party.

Many APC supporters in the State, however, are confident that their party would prevail in court because the evidence presented by their adversary is feeble.
