The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has taken a decisive stance against the ban on its affiliate union, the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), by the Lagos State government. TUC President Festus Osifo announced during a press briefing in Abuja that the labor union would mobilize its members for a one-day protest to express their dissatisfaction with the ban. The ban has sparked controversy and legal battles, with the National Industrial Court ruling that the state government lacks the authority to proscribe a trade union registered by the Federal Government.

The Planned Protest:

The TUC is leaving no stone unturned in its quest for justice. It has directed all affiliate unions, including the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, to join the protest. The labor leader emphasized that they had exhausted all avenues for a peaceful resolution, including written communication and meetings with the Lagos State government.

Calls for Caution:

Festus Osifo called upon the Ministry of Labour and Employment, which has the authority to register and deregister trade unions, to intervene and caution the Lagos State government. He stressed that the ban on a legally registered trade union was unacceptable to the TUC and its members.

The Shutdown Threat:

Should their protest yield no resolution, TUC has threatened to stage a total shutdown of Lagos State. They are determined to protect the rights of their affiliate union and assert their stance on the matter. To ensure the safety of their members during the protest, they have informed relevant security agencies and affiliates to converge on Lagos for the event.
