Nigerian Government Acknowledges Role of Bad Governance in Country’s Problems

The Nigerian government has openly recognized that many of the challenges facing the nation stem from issues of governance. During a press conference on Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, admitted that bad governance has been a significant contributor to the nation’s current predicaments.

While addressing journalists in Abuja, Akume expressed confidence that Nigerians would soon gain insights into what went wrong and how the country ended up in its current situation. He emphasized that the present government, under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, has been actively addressing these challenges.

One notable move mentioned by Akume was President Tinubu’s decision to appoint a special investigator to audit the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The outcome of this investigation, expected to be released soon, will shed light on any irregularities within the CBN and related entities.

Akume praised the positive impact of President Tinubu’s decisions on the capital market, stating that experts have hailed it as a significant improvement not witnessed in the past 15 years.

Regarding Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary celebrations, Akume clarified that it would be a low-key event and affirmed that no world leaders had been invited. This decision reflects the country’s consideration of current economic challenges.

The theme for this year’s anniversary is “Nigeria @ 63, Renewed Hope for Unity & Prosperity.” Akume emphasized the importance of celebrating Nigeria’s democratic journey, which has remained unbroken since 1999.

He also touched on the government’s awareness of the economic difficulties faced by Nigerians, particularly after the removal of fuel subsidies and global economic downturn impacts. Akume reassured that the government was actively working to provide palliatives to alleviate these challenges, including improved transportation and engagement with labor organizations.

In conclusion, Akume reiterated the government’s commitment to the “Renewed Hope Agenda,” spearheaded by President Tinubu, which aims to address key issues like food security, poverty reduction, security, economic growth, access to capital, rule of law, and anti-corruption efforts.

The 63rd independence anniversary celebrations include various events such as symposiums, public lectures, and religious activities to commemorate this significant occasion in Nigeria’s history.
