Federal Government’s Promises Access to Clean Water, and Irrigation

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that Nigerians have access to clean water, proper sanitation, and sustainable irrigation practices. This commitment was underlined during a three-day ‘Top Management Retreat’ held in Abuja, focusing on strategic planning to achieve the ministry’s mandate.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr Joseph Utsev, emphasized the importance of the retreat as a platform for sharing experiences, best practices, and innovative knowledge to bolster the water sector and its services. Represented by Minister of State Bello Goronyo, Utsev expressed optimism about Nigeria’s potential to provide clean water, sanitation services, and an environment sustainable for future generations.

He stated, “I believe that through knowledge exchange and collaboration, we can develop strategies and action plans that will lead to tangible improvements in the sector across the country.” The minister’s confidence in the retreat’s outcome was evident as he encouraged collective efforts to ensure a healthier and more prosperous future for Nigerians.

Notably, the ministry is actively addressing issues related to improved access to potable water, sanitation, dams, irrigation, flood management, and climate change, aligning its efforts with presidential target areas. The retreat was deemed essential to achieve these goals effectively.

Participants were urged to devise achievable strategies that align with the ministry’s policies and shared vision for enhanced service delivery and impact on the Nigerian population. Furthermore, they were encouraged to align their efforts with the current administration’s priorities.

Esther Walson-Jack, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, stressed the importance of the retreat in repositioning the ministry for effective service delivery. She highlighted the crucial role the ministry plays in managing Nigeria’s water resources, and ensuring access to safe and clean water for all citizens.

Walson-Jack called for collaboration among public and private sectors to address challenges related to water supply, irrigation, sanitation, and other related issues. She emphasized the need for innovative thinking and knowledge sharing in the water sector to drive progress.

The retreat aimed to foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, and creative thinking, all with the goal of advancing water resources development and management in Nigeria.
