Alessio Fortino, the social media manager for Napoli, resigned from his position in response to criticism of a Tiktok video posted on the team’s account that made fun of Nigerian footballer Victor Osimhen.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, after Napoli broadcast a video of Osimhen on its social media account to mock the Nigerian player for missing a penalty kick in their 0-0 draw against Bologna, there was fury on and off social media.

Football fans all over the world watched the popular video despite the fact that Osimhen himself had deleted all posts about Napoli from his Instagram account and that his agent, Roberto Calenda, had threatened legal action.

In response to the news, the Nigerian government said it would speak with the governments of Italy, Napoli, and Osimhen over the issue.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, Osimhen has improved greatly since joining Napoli. With 26 goals last season, he led the club and Serie A in scoring as Napoli won their first Scudetto in 33 years.

However, Napoli shared two videos in which the Super Eagles player was humiliated. The first of the films showed the 24-year-old striker pleading for a penalty and then shooting the spot-kick wide while the audio was sped up and childish.

Osimhen was described to a “coconut” in a second video posted by the club, which was generally perceived as a racial epithet.

Although Napoli claims they didn’t mean any harm and Osimhen has since played in two matches and scored in both, Fortino appears to have paid with his job for the incident.

Confirming his decision on Instagram, Fortino wrote: “Today, after 805 days, my professional adventure with SSC Naples ends. For many, this job would be comparable to a dream, for me, it was a simple daily reality: a reality built on commitment and fueled by the constant desire to learn and play.

“I cannot help but express my deepest gratitude to all the colleagues, collaborators, partners and supporters I’ve met along this long journey for making this experience so special.

“Leaving the company with a baggage of great memories and an excitement for the new adventures that lie ahead. Thanks again for everything, and see you soon! Alessio.”

Osimhen is reportedly believed to have received a private apology from Napoli directors on Wednesday for the club’s conduct on social media, according to Italian publication Il Corriere dello Sport.
