The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has reportedly cleared all 204,332 passport application backlogs. This achievement comes following a two-week deadline set by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on September 7th.

The backstory to this accomplishment traces back to the minister’s directive upon taking office. Expressing deep concern over the lengthy delays in passport issuance and the challenges faced by Nigerians both at home and abroad, he ordered that the backlog of passport applications be cleared swiftly.

The news of the successful clearance of the backlog was shared via social media by Segun Dada, the Special Assistant to President Tinubu on New Media. It was a momentous occasion, as it marked a significant step forward in addressing a long-standing issue that had caused frustration and inconvenience to countless Nigerians.

However, it’s worth noting that not all individuals are in agreement with this claim. Some Nigerians have expressed their disagreement, stating that their passport applications, submitted many months ago, have not yet been processed and released.

This divergence of opinions highlights the complexity of managing such a massive backlog and the challenges the NIS faces in ensuring timely passport issuance for all applicants. While progress has been made, it appears that there may still be some outstanding cases that require attention.

The clearance of passport application backlogs is undoubtedly a positive step toward improving the passport issuance process and providing better service to Nigerians. Nonetheless, the government and relevant authorities must continue to work diligently to address any remaining issues and ensure that passport applicants receive their documents in a timely manner.
