Benue State Commissioner for Information Regains Freedom After 10 Days in Captivity

Mr. Mathew Abo, the Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism in Benue State, has been freed after enduring a harrowing 10-day ordeal in captivity. The news was confirmed by the Commissioner himself in a statement he personally signed, bringing a sense of relief and joy to both his family and the community.

The ordeal began when Mr. Abo was abducted from his residence in Zaki-Biam on a fateful Sunday, September 24, 2023. The armed men who carried out the abduction struck while he was with his family members and associates, leaving the community in shock and distress.

During his captivity, there was uncertainty surrounding whether the abductors’ demand for a N60 million ransom was met in exchange for Mr. Abo’s release. The details regarding this aspect of his release were not immediately disclosed.

However, what matters most is that Mr. Abo is now safe and has reunited with his family, thanks to the diligent efforts of the Benue State government, security agencies, and his colleagues who worked tirelessly to secure his freedom.

In his statement, the Commissioner expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Governor Hyacinth Alia, the security agencies involved in the operation, and his fellow public servants for their unwavering support throughout this trying time. He emphasized that his traumatic experience would not deter him from fulfilling his responsibilities to the state and its people.

Mr. Abo also conveyed his hope that his ordeal would serve as a catalyst for renewed efforts to address both internal and external security challenges facing Benue State. He called for the cooperation of all citizens in tackling these issues, emphasizing the importance of unity and vigilance.

He concluded by reaffirming his determination to serve the people of Benue State with renewed vigor, using the platform provided to him as a member of the Benue State Executive Council. He extended his appreciation to the staff of his Ministry, its parastatals, and all well-wishers for their unwavering prayers and support, urging them to continue to pray for his success and that of the entire Alia Administration.
