Atiku Abubakar’s Latest Legal Move

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, has filed new legal documents with the Supreme Court, accusing the incumbent President, Bola Tinubu, of forgery and perjury.

The core of this fresh evidence, presented by the former vice president, centers around President Tinubu’s academic records. These records were obtained from Chicago State University (CSU) and were delivered to Atiku following a court order from Illinois, USA. This order compelled the institution to release the academic records, which Atiku has long sought in Nigerian courts to substantiate his claims that Tinubu forged a certificate allegedly obtained from CSU in 1979. This certificate had been submitted to Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in connection with the 2023 presidential election.

An anonymous member of Atiku’s legal team confirmed the submission of President Tinubu’s academic records to the Supreme Court. However, the specifics of the filing were kept under wraps, underscoring the sensitivity of the matter. Atiku’s lead counsel, Chris Uche, indicated that the process was underway but did not divulge further details.

Paul Ibe, a media consultant to Atiku, confirmed that this fresh evidence would be filed before the midnight deadline on Friday, aiming to complement the grounds of appeal submitted earlier. He clarified that the new evidence, related to Tinubu’s submitted certificate, would support their application and was just one aspect of their case.

In response to these allegations, Tunde Rahman, an aide to President Tinubu, labeled Atiku’s actions as politically motivated and driven by a desire for power. Rahman dismissed Atiku’s pursuit in the Supreme Court as a “wild goose chase” and suggested that it was an attempt to rally political and community leaders against Tinubu.

As the legal battle intensifies, the nation watches with bated breath to see how the Supreme Court will handle this new evidence and whether it will impact the ongoing proceedings. Critics question the timing and nature of Atiku’s claims, while supporters argue that these allegations merit a thorough investigation. Nigerian politics remains embroiled in controversy and intrigue as this legal drama unfolds.
