The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced the reopening of four markets in the state, which were previously sealed due to filth and environmental abuse. These markets include Ladipo Market, Oyingbo Market, Alamutu Ologede Market, and Ile-Epo Oke Odo Market. The decision to reopen these markets comes after they have demonstrated full compliance with the necessary conditions set by LAWMA.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, stressed the importance of stringent compliance measures in safeguarding public health and preventing future health crises. He emphasized that these markets had to meet specific mandatory conditions before resuming operations.
LAWMA To Commence Seal Exercise On Homes Without Waste Bins
The mandatory conditions for reopening included:
1. Providing designated waste points.
2. Installing blockwork fences and platforms for double dino bins.
3. Procuring double dino bins for waste containerization.
4. Committing to sustainable market waste policing for continuous cleanliness.
5. Enforcing proper waste disposal regulations.
6. Engaging bin keepers.
7. Collaborating with accredited waste service providers (PSP operators) for timely waste evacuation.
8. Prompt payment of waste bills.
9. Dislodging street traders from road medians and setbacks.
10. Preventing unauthorized vending.
Dr. Gbadegesin highlighted the health risks associated with filthy markets, including the potential spread of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, Lassa fever, Ebola, malaria, and others. He emphasized that the state could not allow markets to expose residents to such avoidable health hazards.
LAWMA Employees To Receive 20% Pay Raise
LAWMA’s CEO warned that any future violations of the conditions would lead to stiffer sanctions, including the permanent closure of offending markets. He called on market executives and traders to maintain hygiene in their trading activities and urged the public to report any sanitation lapses promptly.
Local government authorities will monitor market operations to ensure compliance with the set conditions. LAWMA continues its zero-tolerance policy for reckless waste dumping in markets and warns that markets failing to comply may face closure and heavy fines.
