Yakubu Gowon, a former military head of state, has refuted media rumours that he is no longer alive.

According to claims that surfaced on social media, the former president of Nigeria passed away at the age of 89.

Gowon, however, said he is still alive and in good health in a brief statement sent on Monday night by his spokesman, Adeyeye E. Ajayi.

The former head of state pleaded with the public to ignore reports of his passing by saying he is not in a rush to pass away.

He said: “I am still around and well. I am not in a hurry.”

Gowon is from Lur, a small village in Plateau State’s current Kanke Local Government Area.

He was created in 1934 in October. He trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England before enlisting in the Nigerian Army in 1954. In 1966, he attained the rank of general.

He presided over the Nigerian Civil War while serving as Nigeria’s president from 1966 until 1975.

During the 1967–1970 Nigerian Civil War, Gowon served as the nation’s president.

Gowon pledged to put Nigeria under civilian administration after the war. He was, however, toppled in a nonviolent coup in 1975.
