Confusion Trails Reported Death Of Former Military Head Of State, Yakubu Gowon

Uncertainty surrounds the alleged demise of Yakubu Gowon, a former military head of state.

As far as Anaedoonline.ng is aware, certain websites on Monday indicated that Gowon had apparently passed away at the age of 89.

Some websites refuted the allegation, claiming that the former military commander is still alive and well and currently residing in London.

In the middle of the turmoil, Adeyeye E. Ajayi, a personal assistant to General Yakubu Gowon, disputed that his principal had passed away.

Quoting Gowon he said, “I am still around and well. I am not in a hurry.”

Gowon is from Lur, a small village in Plateau State’s current Kanke Local Government Area.

He was created in 1934 in October. He trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England before enlisting in the Nigerian Army in 1954. In 1966, he attained the rank of general.

He presided over the Nigerian Civil War while serving as Nigeria’s president from 1966 until 1975.

During the 1967–1970 Nigerian Civil War, Gowon served as the nation’s president.

Gowon pledged to put Nigeria under civilian administration after the war. He was, however, toppled in a nonviolent coup in 1975.
