In a distressing incident in Ogwashi-Uku, Aniocha South Local Council of Delta State, a 45-year-old police inspector, Festus Onori, lost his life after being brutally attacked by a group of suspected commercial motorcyclists. The tragic event occurred while Inspector Onori was traveling with his wife and three children.
The officer, stationed at the Marine Police Station in Cable Point, Asaba, was en route to church with his family when the incident unfolded. The trouble began when a commercial motorcyclist, believed to be of northern descent, reportedly collided with Inspector Onori’s vehicle from the rear, near Asaba, the state capital.
Austin Onori, the deceased’s elder brother, revealed that following the collision, Inspector Onori attempted to park his vehicle properly to assess the situation. However, to his shock, a group of over 20 commercial motorcyclists launched a violent attack on him, wielding sticks and other dangerous weapons.

In an attempt to escape the violent mob, Inspector Onori made a U-turn and retreated to his car. But his pursuers were relentless. They chased him down Marble Hill, Okpanam, and continued to pursue him all the way to Ogwashi-Uku Community near Kwale, where his vehicle eventually ran out of fuel on the Ogwashi Uku Community Kwale expressway.
At this point, the mob had grown to over 50 individuals. Tragically, they surrounded and assaulted him, resulting in his untimely death. What makes this tragedy even more heart-wrenching is that it all unfolded in the presence of his wife and three children. The mob also inflicted severe damage on his vehicle during the ordeal.
It was a passerby who came to the rescue, according to the wife, and took the injured Inspector to the Ogwashi-Uku police station. However, by the time he arrived, it was too late, and he was pronounced dead. As of now, the remains of Inspector Festus Onori have been placed in a morgue.
The situation has left the community in shock and mourning. When contacted for comment, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, stated that he had not received an official report on the matter, highlighting the need for a thorough investigation to bring the culprits to justice.
