The Nigerian government reaped significant revenue from the issuance of National Drivers Licenses (NDLs) in 2022, according to a report from The PUNCH. Analysis of data from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Statistical Digest for the year revealed that over N26.2 billion was generated.
A total of 1,007,948 NDLs were produced during the year. The cost of a driver’s license for different validity periods and purposes ranged from N17,000 for a renewal to N35,000 for a new 5-year license. The average cost for a driver’s license in 2022 was N26,000.

Quarterly production data showed fluctuations throughout the year. In the first quarter, the FRSC produced 143,686 licenses, followed by 333,752 in the second quarter. The third quarter saw 272,324 licenses produced, slightly less than the second quarter, while the last quarter produced 258,186 licenses, marking a 5.2 percent decrease.
The breakdown of production by state revealed that Lagos had the highest production of NDLs with 137,814 units, closely followed by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with 52,880 units. Delta, Ogun, and Oyo also contributed significantly, producing 60,527 units, 37,682 units, and 27,402 units, respectively.
Interestingly, earlier in the year, the Directorate of Road Traffic Services in the FCT reported that over 15,000 driver’s licenses were yet to be collected by their owners, highlighting the importance of timely license pickup.
