Twitter (X) Introduces $1 Annual Subscription Fee for New Users to Combat Spam and Bots

Twitter, now known as X, has revealed a new program called “Not A Bot” that requires new and unverified users to pay a $1 annual subscription fee for signing up. This initiative is currently being tested in New Zealand and the Philippines.

According to an official statement shared by the social media platform, the program aims to reduce spam, manipulation, and bot activity while maintaining platform accessibility. Existing users are not affected by this new subscription model.

X’s chairman, Elon Musk, explained on Twitter that the annual fee is intended to combat spam and automated bot accounts. While reading tweets remains free, writing them will cost $1 per year for new, unverified users. Musk believes this approach will make it significantly more challenging for bots to manipulate the platform, although it may not completely eliminate them.

The introduction of an annual subscription fee represents an innovative approach to address issues related to spam and bot activity on social media platforms, balancing accessibility with a small financial commitment from users. This move demonstrates X’s commitment to enhancing the overall quality of user interactions on its platform.
