FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has extended the “develop or revoke” ultimatum given to religious bodies in the territory to allow them more time to address the issue. Previously, the minister had issued a three-month notice to the owners of 189 undeveloped plots but has now granted religious groups an extension due to their reliance on donations from their members. The extension is intended to ensure that these groups have sufficient time to carry out the necessary developments. Wike emphasized that the revocation order was not targeted at any particular group but aimed to change the territory’s landscape and discourage criminal activities in abandoned plots.

Additionally, Wike clarified that the controversy surrounding the alleged demolition of a mosque in Rivers State during his tenure as governor was a political move by his opponents, stating that no mosque was demolished during his time as governor.

Furthermore, the minister discussed the budget for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for the coming year, taking into account various stakeholders’ concerns and unions. He also revealed that the FCT’s monthly wage bill currently stands at N8 billion and excludes the recent N35,000 wage award for civil servants. Wike stressed the need to consider the available resources when addressing financial demands, explaining that the majority of the budget is spent on recurrent expenditures, making it challenging to fund infrastructure projects.

Wike’s interactions with religious groups and other stakeholders reflect his commitment to addressing the unique challenges and concerns in the FCT, both in terms of development and finances. The extension of the “develop or revoke” order for religious groups demonstrates his willingness to work with different segments of the community to find practical solutions.
