Nigerian Navy Apprehends 11 Stowaways on Panama Vessel Bound for Ghana

The Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft intercepted and paraded 11 stowaways who were apprehended on board a Guangzhou Highway Panama vessel en route to Ghana. The stowaways explained that they had believed the vessel was heading to Europe and had decided to follow it in search of better opportunities.

The operation was carried out by the vigilant patrol team of NNS Beecroft on Tuesday around 7 p.m. Lieutenant Commander Ayobami Tunde-Alli, standing in for the Commander of NNS Beecroft, Commodore Kolawole Oguntuga, provided details of the operation to journalists.

He stated, “In a display of exceptional vigilance, the Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft patrol team, while on routine patrol, successfully intercepted and apprehended some individuals on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, around 7 pm at obscured spaces of the stern gate onboard Guangzhou Highway Panama, which was en route to Ghana.”

Initially, four stowaways were captured from the vessel’s stern. However, further investigations revealed the presence of additional stowaways inside the ship. This operation not only highlighted the Navy’s dedication to maritime security but also shed light on the plight of individuals who are often compelled to take risky journeys in search of a better life.

The 11 stowaways were subsequently handed over to the Nigerian Immigration Service in Apapa. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining vigilance in safeguarding national and international borders and the often dangerous journeys individuals undertake in pursuit of a brighter future.
