The political landscape in Ondo State, Nigeria, is heating up as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the State House of Assembly clash over the absence of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who returned from a medical vacation abroad. The PDP is calling for Akeredolu’s impeachment, alleging that his extended absence since April has paralyzed governance in the state and violates the constitution.

The PDP, through its Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Peretei, argues that Ondo State has been in turmoil for nearly six months due to the governor’s ill health. They claim that rather than being transparent about Akeredolu’s condition, his aides have resorted to insulting the intelligence of the people. The PDP is now urging the State Assembly to invoke sections of the constitution to assess Akeredolu’s medical status.

In response, the House of Assembly has rejected the PDP’s demands, asserting that the governor has been performing his constitutional duties and has not breached any aspect of the constitution. The Majority Leader of the assembly, Mr. Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, stated that the PDP seems unaware of the governor’s activities and the duties of a governor.

Adding to the political turmoil, youth leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-West criticized the PDP for calling for Akeredolu’s resignation or impeachment. They described the PDP in the state as confused and dying, emphasizing that the governor’s need for rest and recovery is a testament to his human nature.

Meanwhile, concerns are mounting about the whereabouts of the embattled deputy governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Reports suggest that he may have relocated to Abuja to avoid impeachment by the state assembly. An aide to the deputy governor revealed that the move to Abuja was intended to thwart the assembly’s efforts to oust him and to seek support from those sympathetic to his case.
