Doctor Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Rape of a Minor

The Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja has handed down a life imprisonment sentence to Dr. Olufemi Olaleye, the Medical Director of the Optimal Cancer Care Foundation. The case revolved around the defilement of his wife’s 15-year-old niece, and here’s what you need to know about this troubling case:

The Verdict

Justice Rahman Oshodi, presiding over the case, delivered the life imprisonment sentence after finding Dr. Olaleye guilty of defilement and sexual penetration of the minor. The judge’s decision was based on compelling evidence that the prosecution presented.

Charges and Plea

Dr. Olaleye faced two counts of defilement and sexual assault by penetration involving his wife’s niece, as filed by the Lagos State Government. He initially pleaded not guilty to these charges when arraigned on November 30, 2022.

The prosecution asserted that the crimes occurred between February 2020 and November 2021 at a residence located at No 17, Layi Ogunbambi Close, Maryland, Lagos state. Dr. Olaleye was accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with the 15-year-old niece and also sexually assaulting her by penetrating her mouth with his penis.

Legal Basis

The charges against Dr. Olaleye were filed under Sections 137 and 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015, which prohibit such actions.

Bail and Conditions

Initially, after pleading not guilty, Dr. Olaleye was granted bail in the amount of N50 million, with two sureties required to have landed property in Lagos state and provide proof of tax payments to the Lagos state government for the last three years. Additionally, he had to deposit his international passport, including his British passport, and the original documents of his landed property with the court registrar.

Victim’s Testimony

During the trial, the victim’s aunt, Mrs. Aderemi Olaleye, testified against her husband. She revealed that Dr. Olaleye had been sexually abusing her niece during her stay with them. The abuse included introducing the minor to pornography and engaging in oral sex with her, even going so far as to release sperm into her mouth. This disturbing conduct transpired from March 2020 to July 2021.

A Heart-Wrenching Revelation Mrs. Olaleye shared that her niece eventually confided in a relative and their driver about the abuse. She reported that Dr. Olaleye threatened to harm her and her niece if she disclosed the crimes to anyone.
