A man named Sodirudeen Rufai was arrested for attempting to set fire to a Guaranty Trust Bank building in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He took this drastic step after claiming that an unauthorized debit of N500,000 from his account went unresolved despite his complaints to the bank.
Rufai reportedly reported the matter to the Area Commander, Metro, Abeokuta, who advised him to allow the bank to follow its procedure to investigate the unauthorized deduction. However, the situation escalated when the bank informed him that he had been defrauded.
In response, Rufai allegedly returned to the bank with petrol, intending to set the banking hall on fire. As the dramatic scene unfolded, some customers sought safety while others, along with the bank’s security staff, managed to subdue Rufai before he could ignite the petrol.

The suspect was handed over to the Ibara Police Division by the bank’s Chief Security Officer, Godwin James. During interrogation, Rufai claimed he took extreme action to draw attention to the issue of his missing money.
The state police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, announced that Rufai would face charges of attempted suicide and murder. While acknowledging his right to report the missing funds, the police emphasized that his method of addressing the issue was inappropriate, and if successful, it would have resulted in significant harm to others.
