House of Reps Reveals Concern Over Allegations Raised By Justice Dattijo

The recent remarks made by Musa Dattijo, a former justice of the Supreme Court, have alarmed the House of Representatives.

Recall that retired Justice Datijo stated that the CJN has great power that can be used to thwart the administration of justice last Friday at a ceremony held in his honour.

According to Dattijo, the CJN is the chairman of the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee, which selects Senior Advocates of Nigeria and other legal institutions, as well as the chairman of the National Judicial Commission (NJC), which is in charge of overseeing the appointment and punishment of judges.

The former justice said that considering the supervision responsibilities he performs for the quantity of legal institutions across the country.

Oluwole Oke, the chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, stated that members of the Green Chambers were worried about the problems brought up by Dattijo in an interview with Newsmen over the weekend.

The member for Osun State’s Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency stated that work was already in progress on several of the issues brought up by the departed Supreme Court justice during his farewell speech.

He said, “We are concerned about the Datijo’s revelations, but as it is now, it is an allegation.

“The judiciary is an independent arm of government, though, we have two standing Committees of the House overseeing the judiciary.”

On whether the House Committee on Judiciary would look into the issues Datijo raised in the course of the next constitutional amendment, Oke said, “We will look into the issues. Already, we have a referral at hand which we are working on. It is about the lack of adequate number of Justices at the appellate court and the Supreme Court which has hampered efficient and timely delivery of justice in Nigeria.”
